The Herbalife Story

It began with Mark Hughes, who developed a lifelong passion for nutrition and safe effective weight management after suffering a personal tragedy. For years Mark watched his mother’s health deteriorate as she tried one diet after another to lose weight. She died aged 36 from an accidental overdose arising from a dependence upon prescription diet pills.

Although Mark was only 18, he was determined to find a way to help people improve their well-being through good nutrition and develop a programme designed to lose weight responsibly and effectively.

Since then, Mark has dedicated his life to helping people manage their weight safely and effectively through good nutritional support.

Mark became involved in the weight-loss industry, joining first one company and then another. Both distributed nutritional products through independent Distributors. Through hard work, dedication and applying the principles of network marketing, Mark quickly became one of the top distributors. However, he learned his lesson the hard way as both companies failed to fulfil their ethical commitments to their Distributors and went out of business.

Shortly after, Mark met Dr. Bruce Halsted, a world-renowned physician from Los Angeles, California, who specialised in cancer therapy. Learning of Mark’s interest in safe weight loss and sound nutrition, Dr. Halsted invited him to a herbal symposium on Chinese herbs. Mark’s excitement grew as he listened to expert after expert explain how the Chinese had used herbs for thousands of years to improve health and well being. Mark visited China and became convinced that by combining ancient herbal wisdom and state-of-the-art technology, he could create the most innovative and effective weight-management and nutritional products in the world.

Mark met Richard Marconi, a leading developer and manufacturer of nutritional products in California. Discovering their interests were similar, they decided to work together. Although herbs and botanicals were unfamiliar to most Westerners at the time, Mark and Richard wanted to formulate the absolute best products so everyone could benefit from herbal nutrition. As a result of comprehensive research, development and testing, the original Herbalife Weight-Management Programme was born in 1980. What began as a product Mark sold out of the boot of his car, has now become a global organisation enriching the lives of millions of people from diverse cultures and backgrounds all around the world.

After much research and development, Mark launched Herbalife in February of 1980.

Sales the first month were $23,000. Then, astoundingly, by the end of the first year, sales skyrocketed to more than $2 million. Currently a billion dollar Company with exciting growth potential, Herbalife's goal in the next few years is $5 billion per year in retail sales and to market its excellent weight-loss, nutritional and personal care products in every country around the world.
